ATP’s Classroom Connections program brings the excitement of live theatre to students across Calgary! Bringing live theatre, professional artists and the youth of Calgary together, ATP strives to assist teachers in integrating one of life’s essentials, the arts, into their curriculum. ATP brings contemporary, relevant plays to life on the Martha Cohen Theatre stage and is proud to offer classes the opportunity to see our productions with our Student Matinee Series!

Alberta Theatre Projects is pleased to announce
the 2008/2009 Student Matinee Series

PLEASE NOTE :

• All shows are performed in the Martha Cohen Theatre in the EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts, located directly across 8th Ave from Olympic Plaza
• All shows start at 12:00pm sharp, and we open our lobby doors at 11:15am if you and your class would like to come early and eat your lunch!
• We recommend you book your buses for an 11:00am pick up from your school, and based on the running time of the production, no later than a 2:15pm pick up from the Martha Cohen Theatre.
  

Ticket Cost: $12 per student, includes a take home souvenir program

*For every 10 student tickets, you receive 1 complimentary chaperone ticket

Student Matinees on October 1st and 8th, 2008

The small town of Unity, Saskatchewan, lost among the wheat fields of the Canadian prairies, eagerly anticipates the return of its boys from the Great War. Beatrice Wilde has just turned 21 and is predicting another tough week: not only has her precocious sister returned to town with a “sex book”, her best friend Mary just received a marriage proposal from her soldier boyfriend overseas. Beatrice can’t even get a simple thank you for the hundreds of hand-knit socks she’s been sending to her own beloved soldier, Glen. And then, there is the mystery of the blind soldier who has arrived unexpectedly in town looking for his father. Meanwhile, rumours swirl about a strange flu that has been moving toward Saskatchewan from the east.

Kerr’s Governor General’s Award winning play is an amusing, touching, and intensely human portrait of small-town life on the prairies.

Recommended for Grade 10 up due to Mature Themes.

The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood

Student Matinees take place from late November through December 18th, 2008

The classic story of Robin Hood, acrobatic champion of the oppressed, bounds onto our Family Holiday stage guaranteeing to thrill the entire family. Labouring to set things right through swashbuckling feats, Robin manages to also make life miserable for the villain Prince John and his evil cohort, the Sheriff of Nottingham. Leading his band of Merry Men, including Friar Tuck, Little John, and Alan-a-Dale, Robin steals from the rich to give to the poor and wins the heart of feisty Maid Marian.

Fresh from the playwright who brought you Peter Pan, we are proud to present you with this new adaption of the traditional tale, suitable for the entire school.

Recommended for Grade 3 and up

The Essentials

The Essentials are a resource guide that will assist you in preparing your students for their visit to the theatre and suggests how to easily implement the play into your curriculum. It includes information such as grade recommendations, student advisories, classes with which the play is associated (i.e. how it connects to the curriculum), themes and ideas that relate to the curriculum, play information, author bios, character analysis and more.

Backstage Tours

Arrange a behind the scenes tour of the Martha Cohen Theatre where your students will discover all the magic that goes behind the creation. For those especially 'dramatic' students

If you have a student who has shown particular interest in theatre, please encourage them to look into Job Shadowing and the Junior Apprenticeship Program.

And especially for you...

Here at ATP we understand how important it is for teachers to continue learning. For that reason, we have opened up our Job Shadowing program for teachers as well. Spend a day touring and observing behind the scenes to reinvigorate your passion and top it off with an evening performance from the best seat in the house, the stage management booth! Watching and listening a professional show come to life with some of the most advanced sound and light equipment available is a learning opportunity any teacher can take advantage of, and bring back to your students.
