The 2016-2017 Season
A Message from Artistic Director, Vanessa Porteous
Nowadays, ATP is a hopping little joint on Olympic Plaza, where Calgarians gather for relevant, passionate, and engaging contemporary theatre from Canada and beyond. But you may not know that 45 years ago, our company was founded to tell exclusively Canadian stories. For the first few years, that was our specialty. It was a brave and unusual thing to do at the time. Right from the get go, we were leaders in creating the Canadian voice.
Though our line-up of plays has expanded to take on the world, Canadian work has remained at the heart of what we do. Year after year, ATP contributes to the national story, helps to forge a Canadian identity, and enriches our sense of community. Who are we as a community, who are we as a nation, without our stories? Like gathering around a campfire, sharing stories unites us.
And so, to mark 45 years of creating community right here in Calgary, and to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, we present a season of six stories about Canada, by Canadians, for Canadians. This very special season features four world premieres, including three Enbridge New Canadian Plays, and the launch of a brand new made-at-ATP Family Holiday Show.
Like the country we love so much, the characters in these plays are on the cusp of great growth and change. Each in their own way, they stand in the doorway to a new life, looking back on where they’ve come from, as they leap into the future.
These plays are funny, smart, emotional, real. They’re probing, groundbreaking, fresh. They’re brand-new. They’re timeless. They’re about us.
